Make Your Wedding Nerdy

You’re in the midst of planning your wedding day and you get to the part where you start thinking about how you can incoporate your nerdiness into the day.

“My parents are paying for this, and they would like things a certain way.”
”This is a wedding, so it should be fancy and traditional.”
”I wonder what my guests will think if I have nerdy elements as part of our day.”
”I really want to do those Star Wars themed centerpieces I saw on Pinterest, and have lightsabers as props for the dance floor, but I’m not even sure how to execute that.”

You most likely agree with one of these statements (or a close variation) and that’s ok! We’re going to go over how you can incorporate your nerdiness into your wedding day, so your personality still shows through!

Compromise & Communicate
If you are in the situation where your parents, or other family members, are paying for your wedding (or a good majority of it) understandably they will have a large say in what goes into the wedding. You can have a conversation and discuss ways you can incorporate nerdy elements into the day, even if they are subtle! If you have this discussion and your parents or family are ok with your ideas, awesome! However, if they are not and you’re treading troubled waters, come to a compromise. Depending on your family, your mileage may vary, but definitely have a conversation!

For example, a great easy way to incorporate some nerdiness would be to send out nerdy Save the Dates or Wedding Invitations! There are a variety of invite creators out there, especially on Etsy, that create invites that look like a wedding invite, but have nerdy elements that are very subtle. My husband and I personally looked into Star Wars invitations. You could also do your engagement session with some nerdy attire or props and include those photos on your Save The Dates!

For example, Stephanie & Dominic wanted some photos that show off who they are & their nerdiness, so we did an engagement session to incorporate that.

Decide WHAT you want to incorporate
You may have several nerdy interests, which is great, but can you realistically incorporate all of them into your wedding? Possibly; but to save yourself undue stress as you get closer to your big day I’d recommend picking a theme, or certain fandom, to incorporate into your wedding. My husband and I have several shared fandoms, including Disney, Star Wars, and Anime. He is also an avid reader and loves books (especially Stephen King) and comic books. We ended up doing a general nerdy theme and incoporated Star Wars and Disney into the decor. We also had Disney music and music from movies on our Spotify playlist. For our Wedding Part II, we were planning on going with a general nerdy theme and incorporating Disney into the mix, but we ended up cancelling our Part II (planning for a 5 year anniversary celebration instead).

Decide HOW you want to incorporate
You’ll also need to figure out HOW you can incorporate a theme. Maybe you want to be subtle, or maybe you want to be super bold and show off all the nerdiness. Whichever is the vibe you’re feeling, that’s fine! If you’re going the subtle route, maybe your wedding ring could be nerd inspired. For example, for Laura & Mike’s Disney wedding, Mike had a Tron wedding band and Laura had a Tangled themed wedding ring set!

Let’s say you’re both REALLY into comics, you could incorporate comic books into your theming. For example, because my husband loves comics, we got this boutenneire which was made out of comic book pages instead of traditional flowers. If you see something you like on Pinterest, check Etsy as someone may make it. There may even be a DIY tutorial on Youtube if you’d like to attempt crafting elements yourself, but also take into account this will add to your wedding prep workload 😉.

For Rae & Jonathan’s wedding, they also love a variety of fandoms, so their flowers were made from book pages, and their program was both a Playbill & Sword Art Online inspired! The music for their ceremony also had nods to fandoms they love including Prelude from Final Fantasy VI, River Flows In You from Twilight, A Tender Feeling from Sword Art Online, and Wrapped in Gentleness from Kiki’s Delivery Service. They also got married at the Arden Theatre as they fell in love through theatre, LOVE IT!

Mary Kate & Daniel have roots in Philadelphia, so they incorporated Philadelphia staples into their wedding, including a seating chart and table names based off the SEPTA rail map and heart shaped Philly Soft Pretzels! Daniel also makes balloon art, so his balloons were centerpieces; Mary Kate has always had a tie to music so they also had the West Philadelphia Orchestra show up and put on an AMAZING performance!

Melissa & Nikki had some Disney inspired elements in their intimate wedding. They did a sand ceremony after saying their vows, which had a Walt Disney quote in the decor and there were several Happily Ever After inspired decorations within the reception space!
